Search help

A strength of the HPA database is the gene-centric integrations of a large collection of different datasets. The Search function allows you to search for an individual gene, but also to perform complex searches. Using pre-defined search terms, Searches can be peformed based on general gene information (eg. gene name or chromosome location) as well as data from all different sections of the HPA (eg tissue expression or prognostic cancer association).

To build a search query, click on Fields to the right.

A number of drop down menus will appear under the search area.

The leftmost menu contains the logical operators AND and NOT. Field allows you to select which type of general gene information, section or dataset to query.

Depending on your choice of Field term, one or more fields may appear to the right, allowing you to choose from a number of pre-defined search terms.

When you click Add, the query is added to the search field.

You can either click Search to view the results of your query or click Fields and use the logical operators to add more search terms to your query.

Below are some examples of different types of searches that can be performed.

Gene list search

To filter on a list of gene names:

  1. Click Fields
  2. Open the Field drop down menu, scroll down to GENE INFO and select Gene name
  3. Paste your gene list in the field for Gene name using comma as a delimiter
  4. Click Add
  5. Click Search

Chromosome and evidence search

To find proteins from chromosome 5 and where the HPA project have shown evidence at protein level:

  1. Click Fields
  2. Select Chromosome in the Field field
  3. Select 5 in the Chromosome field
  4. Click Add and then click Fields
  5. The operator in the left field should be AND
  6. Select HPA evidence in the Field field
